چکیده

Mosquitoes are the most important single group of insects in terms of public health importance, which transmit a number of diseases, such as malaria, filariasis, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, etc. causing millions of deaths every year. Repeated use of synthetic insecticides for mosquito control has disrupted natural biological control systems and led to resurgences in mosquito populations. It has also resulted in the development of resistance1, undesirable effects on non-target organisms and fostered environmental and human health concern2, which initiated a search for alternative control measures. Plants are considered as a rich source of bioactive chemicals3 and they may be an alternative source of mosquito control agents.

Larvicidal potential of Cyathea species against Culex quinquefasciatus

Resistance to insecticides has persuaded researchers to find new methods to control Culex quinquefasciatus proliferation. Plants may be a source of alternative agents for mosquito control due to ever-growing insecticide resistance in mosquito vectors and environmental imbalance caused by synthetic insecticides. The present study was intended to study the larvicidal activity of selected Cyathea ...

Evaluation of the Larvicidal Efficacy of Five Indigenous Weeds against an Indian Strain of Dengue Vector, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae)

Background and Objectives. Aedes aegypti, dengue fever mosquito, is primarily associated with the transmission of dengue and chikungunya in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The present investigations were carried out to assess the larvicidal efficiency of five indigenous weeds against Ae. aegypti. Methods. The 1,000 ppm hexane and ethanol extracts prepared from the leaves and stem...

LARVICIDAL ACTIVITY OF PERESKIA BLEO (KUNTH) DC. (CACTACEAE) FRUIT ENDOCARP CRUDE AND FRACTIONATED EXTRACTS AGAINST AEDES AEGYPTI (L.) (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE) Damrongpan Thongwat1,2, Lucksagoon Ganranoo3 and Ratchanaporn Chokchaisiri3

The use of insecticides can cause adverse effects in vector control, a plant bio-insecticide is an advantageous substitute. Currently, the promising mosquito larvicidal activity from plant extracts has been reported worldwide, including Thailand. In this study, the endocarp of Pereskia bleo (Kunth) DC. fruit was extracted with distilled water and ethanol. Crudes and fractionated groups of the e...

Evaluation of 15 Local Plant Species as Larvicidal Agents Against an Indian Strain of Dengue Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae)

The adverse effects of chemical insecticides-based intervention measures for the control of mosquito vectors have received wide public apprehension because of several problems like insecticide resistance, resurgence of pest species, environmental pollution, toxic hazards to humans, and non-target organisms. These problems have necessitated the need to explore and develop alternative strategies ...

Evaluation of mosquito larvicidal efficacy of leaf extract of a cactus plant, Agave sisalana

The leaf extract of Agave sisalana was tested as a larvicide against three vector mosquito species viz., Anopheles stephensi, Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti. Preliminary results showed that the 2% dilution of the leaf extract produced 100% mortality of IIIrd instar larvae of An. stephensi and 1% dilution produced 100% mortality in case of Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypti. For furt...
